Basement Makeover

When we first moved into this house 2 years ago, we were on a tight budget but my husband wanted to make the basement a place were we can hang out and he could have his own space with all his musical instruments… and now with his new hobby, droning. My husband decided he was going to buy the furniture and make it his own space. It didn’t look like this back then, in the last two years we have kind of moved everything I stopped using in the main living room, down to the basement.

For the last 9 months, I stopped hanging out downstairs because the sofa gave me the worse back pain. It’s was really uncomfortable and I just couldn’t hang out there anymore. About two weeks ago, my husband told me to re-do the basement and make it look nice with a comfortable sofa I can actually sit on, so we can go back to hanging out in the basement.

While shopping around, I decided to add some color and make it a fun place. I can’t change the walls or remove the support beams in the room so adding some fun furniture was the only way to go. If you’ve been following me since I started blogging last year, you will notice a few pieces I already had and incorporated into the space.

I found this really nice mid-century modern sofa online and it has great reviews, not to mention there was only 2 left in stock when I purchased it (It comes in 4 other colors). The rug I already had in storage. It was in my living room in the winter and I really wanted to use it in this space.

I found the two side tables and although they are really stools, I thought they would look cute. The faux fiddle leaf fig tree is actually from my living room. This room needed some “life”, even if it is faux life. The basement doesn’t get much light so I rather replace the plant upstairs with a real plant and keep the faux in the basement.

The natural wall basket is from Home Goods and the large blue one is from Target. While shopping for a coffee table, I really wanted a light colored table and found this budget friendly table at Target. It reminds me of my coffee table in the living room with the two-tone but this one has lighter legs which I love.

My favorite piece of furniture is the woven bench. I might steal it in a few weeks and put it in the living room because it’s so pretty. I didn’t even know where I was going to put it when I purchased it at Home Goods but I couldn’t leave it behind. I added some family wall art above it and that cute mini tapestries I found on clearance at Target.

The throw pillows I had in my living room and thought they would look great down here. Not everything has to be new. I mixed some new with older items and I stayed really under budget with what my husband gave me.

This weekend I finally hung out in the basement. We binge watched some Netflix and really enjoyed the space. Even my kids loved it and watched their iPads on the new sofa. This is exactly what we wanted…to create another area in the house where we can really enjoy spending time together.
